Applied Science

"Science knows no country, because knowledge belongs to humanity, and is the torch which illuminates the world."
— Louis Pasteur
What We Study

The BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Science (AAQ) offers a vocational and practical approach to learning science. Equivalent to one A Level, it includes both internally assessed assignments and external assessments. The qualification is designed to prepare students for both university and employment in science-related fields.

It covers biology, chemistry and physics in applied contexts, and includes both coursework and exams.

Year 12

Unit 1: Principles and Applications of Biology  - (Exam) Includes cells, tissues, biological molecules and enzymes

Unit 2: Principles and Applications of Chemistry - (Exam) Includes atomic structure, bonding, periodicity, physical and organic chemistry

Unit 3: Principles and Applications of Physics - (Exam) Includes waves, forces, electrical circuits, energy

Year 13

Unit 4: Practical scientific procedures and techniques (Supervised task) – Planning and analysing experiments under timed conditions

Optional units

Unit 5: Science Investigation skills  OR  Unit 6: Contemporary issues in Science

The course offers a strong foundation in applied biology, chemistry, and physics. Its balance of coursework and exams supports students with different learning styles and strengthens scientific understanding through practical application.

Beyond the Classroom

Students on the BTEC Applied Science course benefit from targeted enrichment opportunities that deepen their understanding of science in action.  These include:

  • Access to employer and university-led workshops
  • Practical sessions in our fully equipped science labs
  • Opportunities to develop real-life investigative skills through assignments and independent experiments
  • Guest speakers from STEM industries including healthcare, forensics and pharmaceuticals

Many students combine this course with subjects such as Psychology, or PE, and explore how science impacts the real world through cross-curricular links.

In Year 13, students are supported in preparing for next steps — whether they choose to enter employment, an apprenticeship or higher education. We also encourage and support relevant work experience placements in laboratories, hospitals or STEM outreach programmes.

Where It Might Lead

BTEC Applied Science is highly valued by universities, employers, and apprenticeship providers.

It also opens doors to degree apprenticeships in:

  • Healthcare Science
  • Laboratory Technician Roles
  • Clinical Research
  • Environmental Health

This course is ideal for students aiming for a practical science career — especially those interested in the health, sport, or forensic sectors. The combination of scientific theory and applied investigation makes it particularly relevant for today’s evidence-based careers.

The skills gained — independence, analysis, lab accuracy, and data interpretation — also support a wide range of career pathways in STEM and beyond.
