Applied Science

Course overview

We are introducing this course to the Sixth Form to provide our students with and alternative pathway into post-18 education. Students  who do not wish to study 3 A Level courses now have the option to  continue their science studies at Sacred Heart Sixth Form.

The BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Applied Science is intended as an Applied General qualification for post-16 learners who want to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education, and ultimately to employment in the applied science sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to two A Levels and is normally studied alongside a further Level 3 qualification at Sacred Heart.

There are 6 mandatory units: Principles and Application of Science I, Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques, Science Investigation Skills, Laboratory Techniques and their application, Principles and Applications of Science II, and an Investigative Project.

In addition, students may choose from a number of options which may include the following examples: Physiology of Human Body Systems, Biological Molecules and Metabolic Pathways, Genetics and Genetic Engineering, Diseases and Infection, Industrial Chemical Reactions and Forensic medicine, Collection and Analysis. The full list is available in the 6th Form Curriculum link below.
