Art

The Art Department at Sacred Heart is really quite special. Our spacious and light loft studios create a unique area in school.

Across all key stages the curriculum focusses on developing the skills to enable students to record and express their feelings, ideas and observations; and to develop their appreciation of great artists, craft makers and designers. Students regularly visit London galleries. Partnerships with the Saatchi Gallery, Tate Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum provide opportunities for students to attend lectures by practising artists and art historians.

Key Stage 3

We follow the national curriculum for art
which aims to ensure that all pupils produce creative work, explore their ideas and record their experiences. In KS3, students learn to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art and craft techniques. Students learn to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design. We introduce them to a variety of past and present great artists, craft makers and designers, and so they have an appreciation and understanding of the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Key Stage 4 (GCSE)

For GCSE, students learn to appreciate and value images across times and cultures, and to understand the contexts in which they were made. Students reflect critically on their own and other people’s work, judging quality, value and meaning. They learn to think and act as artists and craftspeople, working creatively and intelligently. They develop an appreciation of art, craft and design, and its role in the creative and cultural industries that enrich their lives.

Weekend workshops and portfolio preparation courses are available at the Camden Arts centre.  Become a member of the Youth Collective and work with other young people to create interesting and independent artwork. Summer and Easter workshops will be available at either The Tate Gallery, The Saatchi Gallery or National Portrait Gallery.
