Chemistry

“It is the chemistry of life that reveals the mystery of creation.”   Inspired by Sr Rita Carroll RSCJ, Sacred Heart science educator.
What We study

This course follows the OCR Chemistry A (H432) specification — a content-led approach that builds a deep understanding of chemical principles and their applications. Topics include:

  • Foundations of Chemistry – atomic structure, bonding, and quantitative chemistry.
  • Periodic Table and Energy – trends, enthalpy, and reaction rates.
  • Organic Chemistry and Analysis – carbon compounds, spectroscopy, and synthesis.
  • Physical Chemistry and Transition Elements – equilibrium, acids, and redox.

Assessment is through three written exams at the end of Year 13. Practical skills are assessed throughout the course and endorsed separately.

Why Study Chemistry at our Sixth Form?

Chemistry is the science of transformation — from atoms to ecosystems; it explains the processes that shape our world.  At our Sixth Form, Chemistry is taught with passion, precision, and purpose. Our experienced teachers bring the subject to life through engaging practical work, real-world applications, and a strong focus on academic excellence.

We offer:

  • Expert teaching from subject specialists with a track record of outstanding student progress.
  • Modern laboratories and access to advanced equipment for hands-on learning.
  • Supportive environment with tailored guidance for university applications, including medicine, veterinary science, and chemical engineering.
  • Enrichment opportunities such as the Chemistry Olympiad, Chemistry in Actions, and links with best schools and universities.

Whether you are aiming for a science-based career or simply want to understand the world more deeply, Chemistry at our Sixth Form will challenge and inspire you.

Beyond the Classroom

Studying Chemistry at A-Level opens doors far beyond the classroom, offering students a rich tapestry of enrichment opportunities that deepen understanding and spark curiosity. Our Sixth Form chemists regularly take part in national competitions such as the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Olympiad, which challenge students to apply their knowledge creatively and critically. These experiences not only stretch academic ability but also foster resilience and independent thinking—qualities central to our Sacred Heart ethos.

Students also benefit from visits to university laboratories and Chemistry in action where they engage with cutting-edge research and gain insight into careers in chemical sciences, medicine, and engineering. Recent trips have included interactive sessions at Imperial College London and the Science Museum, where students explored real-world applications of spectroscopy, materials science, and green chemistry. Guest speakers from industry and academia regularly join us to share their journeys and inspire students to see chemistry as a tool for global change.

Where it Might Lead
