What We Study, WJEC Eduqas GCE A LEVEL in Business
A-Level Business is an exciting and relevant subject that introduces students to the dynamic world of organisations and decision making. Whether you have studied Business at GCSE, the course is designed to give you a strong foundation in the key principles that drive businesses forward. You will explore a wide range of themes including how businesses are started and grown, the role of leadership and decision making, and how businesses respond to external influences such as competition, the economy, and government policy. As the course develops, you will build a deeper understanding of functional areas such as marketing, finance, human resources, and operations, learning how each contributes to the overall success of a business. We also examine strategic decision making, looking at how senior managers shape the long term direction of an organisation and the challenges they face in a globalised and fast changing economy.
There are three exams at A level. Each exam is 2 hours and 15 minutes and assesses different parts of the content and different skills. The third exam is synoptic and brings together all the content from the two years of study.
Our teaching combines theory with practical application. Lessons include case studies based on real businesses, group discussions, problem solving activities, and opportunities to apply your knowledge to real-world scenarios. This interactive approach ensures that you do not just memorise information, but develop the ability to analyse data, evaluate evidence, and make reasoned decisions skills that are highly valued by universities and employers.
What makes Business unique in our Sixth Form is the way we connect classroom learning to the real world. From guest speakers and business trips to enrichment opportunities such as Young Enterprise and national competitions, students gain experiences that go far beyond the exam specification. This balance of academic study and applied learning makes Business an excellent choice for anyone interested in understanding how organisations operate and how they can shape the world around us.
Beyond the Classroom
Studying Business at A-Level is not just about the classroom, it is about exploring how businesses operate in the real world and experiencing opportunities that bring the subject to life. Our students benefit from a wide range of enrichment activities that extend their learning beyond textbooks and exams. Trips to local and national businesses provide valuable insights into how theory is applied in practice, from observing operations in manufacturing firms to understanding how marketing strategies are developed in global brands.
We also encourage students to take part in national competitions such as Young Enterprise, which allow them to work collaboratively, develop innovative ideas, and present solutions to real business problems in front of industry experts. Alongside this, students are offered the chance to attend workshops and guest lectures from entrepreneurs and professionals across different sectors, giving them the opportunity to ask questions and build connections.
For those with an interest in leadership, we run a Business and Economics Society where students can debate topical issues, prepare for university applications, and even support younger pupils in developing financial literacy skills. These activities not only enhance subject knowledge but also develop transferable skills such as teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. Many of our students find that these experiences give them a real edge in university and job applications, helping them to demonstrate initiative, commercial awareness, and the confidence to take on new challenges.
Where it might Lead
Studying A-Level Business can lead to a wide variety of future pathways for students, whether they choose to continue into higher education, take on a degree apprenticeship, or move directly into the world of work.
At university, Business is a versatile subject that connects well with courses such as Business Management, Economics, Accounting and Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management, or International Business. Many of these courses provide opportunities for work placements and study abroad, giving students valuable real-world experience alongside their degree.
For those who prefer a more practical route, degree apprenticeships are an excellent option. These allow students to earn a salary while working for an employer and studying towards a degree level qualification, often in areas like Business Management, Project Management, Digital Marketing, or Chartered Accountancy. This route is increasingly popular as it combines professional experience with academic learning, without the same financial cost as a traditional degree.
In terms of careers, Business A-Level provides skills that are valued across many industries. Students may go on to roles in management, marketing, finance, sales, consultancy, or even entrepreneurship. The subject develops analytical, problem solving, and decision making skills, essential for anyone looking to succeed in today’s fast changing global economy.
