French

“We have strong evidence today that studying a foreign language has a ripple effect, helping to improve student performance in other subjects.” Richard Riley
“To have another language is to possess a second soul.” Charlemagne
"The end for which we are created invites us to walk a road that is always new."  St. Madeleine Sophie Barat

This quote beautifully reflects the journey of language learning - ever-evolving, full of discovery, and rich in purpose.

At Sacred Heart High School, our ethos calls us to educate to a social awareness that impels to action. Studying French aligns with this by equipping students to engage thoughtfully with global issues, appreciate diverse perspectives, and communicate with compassion and clarity. Our founder, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, valued intellectual formation grounded in faith, service, and international understanding - all of which are cultivated through the study of languages.

Where it Might Lead

Studying French opens a world of exciting opportunities for students both academically and professionally. At university, students can choose to pursue French as a single subject or combine it with other languages like Mandarin or Spanish, offering a broad linguistic skill set that is highly valued. Many degree courses also allow students to combine French with subjects such as Business, International Relations, or History, giving them a unique edge in competitive fields.

French degrees often include sandwich courses, enabling students to gain valuable work experience or study abroad for a year, enhancing their employability and cultural understanding. Beyond academia, knowledge of French opens doors to diverse career paths including translation, diplomacy, international business, tourism, teaching, and global development.

It is especially useful for those interested in working with international organisations, NGOs, or multinational companies. Additionally, degree apprenticeships combining language skills with practical work experience are becoming increasingly popular, providing hands-on learning while earning a salary. Mastering French not only develops communication skills but also cultivates cultural awareness and adaptability, qualities essential in today’s global job market. Ultimately, French equips students to explore new cultures, connect with people worldwide, and build rewarding, versatile careers.
