At Sacred Heart High School, our ethos calls us to educate to a social awareness that impels to action. What We Study, AQA A level Spanish 7692   

The course has been designed to offer you an accessible, interesting and challenging Year 12 and Year 13. Topics and skills that were developed at GCSE are broadened and enhanced. The topics are interesting and thought provoking and provide you with the language and skills to write and talk about issues that you care about.  

The topics covered include Aspects of Hispanic Society and Artistic Culture in the Spanish-speaking World. 

In Year 13 you will build upon the skills you developed over the previous twelve months. Additional areas of study include Multiculturalism in Hispanic Society and Aspects of Political Life in the Hispanic World. You will also study a Spanish-language film and a literary text as part of the cultural component. 

Lessons are taught in a highly interactive and supportive way, combining clear teacher-led explanations with independent learning, group discussions, and the use of technology.  Regular assessments and personalised feedback help students to track progress and develop confidence in applying grammar and vocabulary taught.   

Beyond the Classroom

The Spanish A-Level course is taught by two specialist teachers. Enrichment opportunities include:  

• Extracurricular links to St Paul’s Girls’ School  
• Study days, for example Instituto Cervantes 
• Alumnae network (visits from SHHS students who studied a language at university)  
• Subject Ambassadors supporting KS3 students in their learning 
• Possibility of work experience abroad. 
• Weekly conversation classes and exam coaching.

At university, students can choose to pursue Spanish as a single subject or combine it with other languages like Mandarin or French, offering a broad linguistic skill set that is highly valued. French degrees often include sandwich courses, enabling students to gain valuable work experience or study abroad for a year, enhancing their employability and cultural understanding.
