Career Guidance Years 7-13

The taught element Careers Education programme is delivered through PSHE lessons across all year groups 7 -11. There are different units for each year group and these are outlined below. Additionally, departments also deliver careers education related to their specific subject area during lessons. Details of each unit, separate days and events and timings can be found in the Careers Programme in Appendix 1 in the Careers Education Plan, which is reviewed annually.

  • Year 7 Careers Unit:  Knowing yourself and understanding what a career is.
  • Year 8 Careers Unit: The Importance of Career Choices - The Real Game
  • Year 9 Careers Unit:  Choosing subjects and researching careers
  • Year 10 Careers Unit:  Exploring career options and building skills
  • Year 11 Careers Unit:  Making plans and taking next steps

In addition to the above, SHHS also seeks independent advice from external career consultants.

Mr Gordon Young is employed by the Educational Development Trust and provides careers advice and guidance to our Year 7-13 students.  This guidance is tailored to meet the needs of our students and can either be one-to-one or in small groups.  Gordon  supports our Year 9 students through the all- important GCSE options process. GCSE options are presented at Year 9 Parents’ evenings well in advance of when decisions need to be made.  Gordon also offers one-to-one support and advice at Year 11 making crucial A-Level choices and Year 12 for UCAS and future career paths.

Pupils use Unifrog which enables them to explore the world of higher education and work out what A-level subjects might be most useful to them. Careers guidance is offered throughout the school.

All Students can request a careers guidance interview by speaking to Mr Williams or with a Head of Year at any time during the school year.  Parents are also very welcome to get in touch at any time for any advice.

Requests can also be made by e-mail to careers@sacredh.lbhf.sch.uk

Pupils in all year groups have access to a range of extra-curricular clubs and a wide range experiences enabling them to see of the world of work in different contexts, helping them to understand different subjects and their application in the real world.

Pupils with SEND and in receipt of Pupil Premium receive personalised support from the SENCO, independent careers advisor and external bodies where appropriate.
